Dear IAM-UGE member,
On Friday, July 28th, over 30 shop-stewards from around UGE's system took part in the first ever IAM shop-steward training in Chicago. The IAM has two other training sessions scheduled on August 14 and September 12, with over 60 more shop steward volunteers scheduled to attend.
The training, conducted by IAM Grand Lodge Representatives Brianna Gregory and myself, Joe Stassi, focused on the basic skills needed by the shop stewards to effectively represent IAM members at UGE. The shop-stewards who attended the training volunteered to be local union representatives during the IAM's initial station visits and by responding to calls for volunteers to become local reps. No employee who volunteered was turned away and all will be a vital part of building our IAM union at UGE.
As many of you know, each week I continue UGE station visits and have already met with hundreds of employees in 15 stations: AVP, AZO, BHM, BTV, CMI, ERI, EYW, GSP, MKE, MRY, PSP, SAV, SBA, STS and SYR. During my visits I have met with local IAM members and local management. I have learned a lot during these visits and have worked with both local IAM members and local management to resolve issues that have been brought to my attention.
One issue that I would like to emphasize is your right to union representation in a meeting with UGE management that could result in discipline or termination. In many instances, employees have been without union representation during these types of meetings. I strongly urge all employees to demand that a union representative be present in any meeting with UGE management that could result in discipline or termination. If a local shop-steward is not available, local management must call me, so I can sit in on the meeting via telephone.
I've also received many questions regarding shift bids, seniority usage, PTO usage when calling out sick or injured, the administration of the Dependability Point System and other issues. We will be posting on this website a Q & A page that addresses many of these issues/concerns. We are also working with UGE management to identify issues and work together to resolve them.
As you may be aware, UGE recently began operations in four additional cities: Santa Rosa, CA; Champagne, IL; Rochester, MN and Columbia, MO. Remember, under the IAM-UGE contract you have the right to bid to other locations based on your contract seniority. To check the vacancies, click here and look for job vacancies that state "internal applicants only."
Lastly, being that we are in the heat of the summer we must do everything to be safe while working outside to prevent heat exhaustion. Remember, if you are suffering any symptoms of heat exhaustion, please seek medical attention. For more information regarding the prevention of heat exhaustion, click here.
